🌲 Your Summer Guide to Point Defiance Park

Tacoma's 760-Acre Urban Oasis

If you've lived in Tacoma any length of time, you already know: Point Defiance Park is the answer to half your weekend questions.

Point Defiance Park is a 760-acre urban oasis on the northern tip of Tacoma, surrounded on two sides by Puget Sound and nestled inside old-growth forest. The park has been here since 1888, when President Grover Cleveland authorized its use as a public park. It's grown into one of the most beloved parks in the Pacific Northwest. Here's how to make the most of it this summer.

πŸš— Five Mile Drive

The signature scenic loop through the park. Five Mile Drive is closed to cars on weekends, which turns it into one of the best walking, running, and cycling routes in Tacoma. The drive offers access to Owen Beach, Fort Nisqually, the off-leash dog area, and viewpoints of Vashon Island and the Dalco Passage. All parking is free.

πŸ– Owen Beach

About 1,000 feet of rocky eastern shoreline with a recent $6.3M renovation (refreshed pavilion, ADA accessibility, a whale-themed play area, and improved picnicking). Bring water shoes β€” Puget Sound topography means pokey rocks and shells, not white sand. Kayak rentals available at the Boathouse Marina.

🌹 The Rose Garden (and the Other Gardens)

Point Defiance is home to a renowned rose garden with over 1,500 bushes, plus a Japanese Garden, a dahlia trial garden, a fuchsia garden (blooming June–October), a perennial herb garden, an iris garden bordered in old Tacoma cobblestones, a Northwest native garden, and a rhododendron garden tucked into old-growth forest.

πŸ¦… Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

The only combined zoo and aquarium in the Northwest. Highlights include the Asian Forest Sanctuary (Sumatran tigers, clouded leopards, Asian elephants), the Rocky Shores habitat (seals, walruses, otters, puffins), the Arctic Tundra (polar bears, reindeer), and the Pacific Seas Aquarium. Tickets at pdza.org.

πŸ› Fort Nisqually Living History Museum

A restoration of the Hudson's Bay Company outpost as it stood in the 1850s. Nine buildings are open to the public, including the Granary and the Factor's House (both National Historic Landmarks). Volunteers reenact life from the fur-trade era.

β›΅ Dune Peninsula

The newest addition to the park β€” 11 acres transformed from a Superfund site into expansive parkland with sweeping views of Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier. Connected to the rest of the park by the Wilson Way foot bridge, which spans 605 feet long and stands 50 feet high.

🎡 Free Summer Concerts

The Tacoma Concert Band is bringing its free summer concert series back to the park in August. The Point Defiance show is Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 6:30 PM. Bring a blanket.

🎀 Big Shows at Dune Peninsula

The Dune Peninsula Concert Series, produced by Showbox Presents, is bringing national acts to the waterfront this summer:

  • Bob Moses & Cannons: Afterglow β€” July 14, 5:30 PM

  • Alabama Shakes β€” July 24, 7:30 PM

Tickets at dunepeninsula.com.
