Samoa Cultural Days Returns to Tacoma This Week for Its 16th Year

The Asia Pacific Cultural Center's Samoa Cultural Days runs Thursday July 23 through Saturday July 25 in Tacoma.

The 16th year for one of the South Sound's most established cultural celebrations.

Here's how the three days break down:

Thursday, July 23, 6:30 PM
The week opens with a cultural sharing banquet at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center.

Friday, July 24
Youth Gospel Night, a longstanding part of the program.

Saturday, July 25
The grand finale main event at Mount Tahoma High School. This is the centerpiece: traditional Samoan performances, cultural demonstrations, and authentic island food.

In past years the celebration has opened with a colorful parade and the traditional ava welcome ceremony, followed by village singing and chants, siva dancing, cultural displays, arts and crafts, games, and food. The Asia Pacific Cultural Center describes it as "a joyous and festive celebration of the Samoan people and the rich Polynesian heritage."

It's a public event and all are welcome.

Why it matters locally:
Pierce County, Tacoma and Lakewood in particular, is home to one of the largest Samoan communities in the continental United States. Samoa Cultural Days is the week that community's traditions are most visible, and the Asia Pacific Cultural Center has been the institution holding that space for 16 years running.

The APCC also awards scholarships to Samoan youth heading to two-year, four-year, and trade programs as part of the celebration.
