New $480M Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Opening in Tacoma

If you live in Tacoma or anywhere across the South Sound, a major healthcare expansion is about to come online.

The new Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital campus is scheduled to open this May, marking the completion of a massive multi-year construction project designed to expand pediatric care throughout the region.

The development represents one of the largest healthcare investments the South Sound has seen in years.

🏥 A Major Expansion for Pediatric Care

The project includes two major components:

  • A new inpatient hospital tower

  • A new medical office building

Together, these facilities will expand the hospital’s ability to treat children requiring specialized care, while also improving coordination between doctors, specialists, and hospital services.

The design was built specifically around pediatric care, meaning everything from room layouts to medical equipment is tailored for children and their families.

👶 Serving the Entire South Sound

Mary Bridge already plays a critical role in the region’s healthcare system.

Each year, the hospital serves more than 100,000 children from across:

  • Pierce County

  • Thurston County

  • South King County

  • Southwest Washington

  • Rural communities throughout the region

It is also the only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in Western Washington, making it a vital destination for emergency pediatric care.

For many families in the South Sound, Mary Bridge is the closest facility capable of handling complex childhood injuries and illnesses.

💰 A $480 Million Investment

The project was originally announced in 2020, but like many major construction efforts during the pandemic era, it faced delays and rising costs tied to supply chain disruptions and material shortages.

By the time construction neared completion, the total investment had reached approximately $480 million.

Despite those challenges, the expanded campus is now nearing the finish line.

📈 Why It Matters

As the South Sound continues to grow, healthcare infrastructure must expand alongside population growth.

This new campus will help:

  • Increase capacity for pediatric patients

  • Expand access to specialized treatments

  • Reduce the need for families to travel long distances for care

  • Strengthen Tacoma’s role as a regional medical hub

For families across the region, the expanded hospital means more access to advanced care closer to home.

⏳ Opening Timeline

The new campus is expected to open this May, with preparations already underway to transition services into the new facilities.

Once operational, it will mark a major milestone in pediatric healthcare for the entire South Sound.
